The weighbridge is a system of several components that work together to provide a weigh reading when the truck or a large vehicle drives on the scale. It is a large set of scale, mounted permanently on a concrete surface. They are dedicated to weighing large industrial vehicles like trucks or rail containers and their contents, usually for commercial purposes.  It has an electronic or digital panel that displays the weight of the vehicle being weighed.

Types Of Weighbridges

Broadly, weighbridges can be classified into two types:

•                    Above-Ground Weighbridges

•                    In-Ground Weighbridges


Above-ground weighbridges, This type of weighbridge can be supplied in single deck, twin deck, or multi-deck configuration depending on the length of the vehicles that need to be weighed. These are located above the ground surface and require a lot of surface area. Its cost-effectiveness and minimum site preparation make them a popular choice for weighing heavy vehicles.

In-ground weighbridges: As the name suggests, these weighbridges are constructed in the ground. They are divided into semi-pit weighbridges, those with sidewalls serving as retaining walls and which have a level weighing surface, and In-ground weighbridges where the weighing surface is completely level with the surrounding ground.

In-ground Weighbridges can be further divided into:

•                    Semi Pit Weighbridges
They are located at ground level and do not require ramps. This makes them a cost-effective solution for measuring large machinery and equipment vehicles.

•                    Custom Semi-Pit Weighbridges
They are built where site limitations are a consideration and where modifications are necessary to accommodate the size limitations. They are suitable for places that have restrictions on setting up a weighbridge.

•                    Fully in-ground weighbridge
With the smallest footprint, the entirely in-ground weighbridge is the best option for areas with serious space constraints. However, they require substantial site planning, excavation, and reinforcement, making them the most expensive choice.

Working

For all the weighbridges, the vehicle to be weighed is put on the weighing scale. It can be positioned above the ground or in the ground depending on the type of weighbridge. The scale of the weighbridge is mounted on multiple load cells, which helps to weigh the vehicle. They transform the force applied to an electrical output that can be measured. An electrical output is then reflected as readings on the attached digital or electronic monitor. The same procedure is repeated.
